As a junior college transfer in I had to live in the ?"&$%@ dorm for a year but it had its benefits, the next door neighbors were a good source for drugs and the latest schemes.
I came from a life of crime and drug use so even though my first year at SIU was meant to clean up my act taking a U turn was a natural fit. One day the neighbors ushered me in and I could tell something was up because all three of them[which included my long hair jewish roommate] were looking at me with shit eating grins.
Turns out it was fake id day and I was included after my 5 dollar donation. One of them had stolen blank ID cards,we typed and included the new age we were born and took our own photos so that we could get into bars that sold hard liquor.
It was 1976 and one could buy beer at age 19 but you had to be 21 to get into hard liquor serving bars. The ID'S looked great and worked great up until the day I screwed up at the library. I checked out some material and handed the woman the wrong ID card. She was a wise old bird and she looked at the ID and said that the background in the photo didn't look right and that in 20 years she had never seen anything that looked like that. I appeared calm but inside I was freaking out because I knew damn well it would be bad news to be caught making a fake SIU student ID, even if the only thing wrong was the date of birth.
Since I had much experience in lying to women, my parents and all those nice policeman that always wanted to bust my ass, I looked her straight in the eye and told her that when I had my photo taken something was wrong with the screen the photographer used so he had me stand against the wall and have my photo taken.
The truth was I was standing against the dorm room wall when the illicit photo was taken. She repeated her 20 year mantra bullshit and then she surprised the hell out of me and handed it back. I was thankful she did because it was almost to the point of grabbing it back and getting on my way in a hurry.
I made damn sure I never made that mistake again.
