Some girls go for the smooth guys, a rare few will go for the guys that make them laugh. This is about his most embarrassing date.
During the first semester of college, I signed up for a Karate class. The student assistant to the instructor seemed to help me more than the other students even though I had more experience than everybody else. He’d walk with me after class several times. Finally he built up the nerve to call me for a date.
I told him I was going to be babysitting. “Oh,” he said, thinking I was giving him a line. “How ‘bout Sunday night?” I said.
He had planned to take me to a Chinese restaurant. He walked around to open the passenger door for me and couldn’t get it open. The old Citation hatchback car that he had washed in below freezing South Dakota weather looked clean, but the door was frozen shut. He did get it open, but it wouldn’t completely shut again. I held the door closed at times to make sure it wouldn’t fly open while we were driving.
After dinner, we decided we’d go to the coffee shop, and now that the door was working again, we’d drive around and look at Christmas lights. He was trying to remember which street to turn on while driving down a one-way. He was in the center lane when he suddenly realized he needed to turn left.
BANG!
We had clipped the tail light of a car that was cruising past us. It also completely damaged his front bumper. The police arrived and asked everybody questions. That was the last thing we did on our date.
But...that wasn’t our last date. We’ve been married for 6 years now and recently had a baby boy.
