Close to the Cop Action

So we walked back and came away with a somewhat decent story, I hope.
To many this story might seem very lame, but considering we were freshman and only about three weeks into our college experience I thought it was pretty funny and exciting.

At my heavily greek University, freshman guys are the absolute lowest on a very rigid hierarchy, which basically means we watch the girls go out on the weekends to the frats while we stay in the dorm and play xbox, ping-pong, watch movies, and drink when we have anything.

Boredom started to drive us a little nuts.

One Saturday night two other hall friends and I thought it would be cool to dress up in suits, fire up some cigars, and see if our ultra-classy look would get us into any parties. As we walked out of the dorm nearly every person we ran into said our plan was absolutely stupid, that we wouldn’t get into anything, and even if we did our clothes would get ruined.

So we changed plans and decided to head into town instead of the frat houses.

My University is right next to a small rural town where a lot of upperclassmen have houses. So we walked around town and had some fun getting a few compliments. We then thought it would be fun to grab some empty beer cans to bring back to the dorm to fool our buddies that we got beer and had a great time.

Empty cans were really easy to come by, and we started heading back with cans in our pockets.

On our way back we stopped and talked to some guys at a house, and he offered to give us all beers if one of us shotgunned a beer on their porch.

My one friend quickly agreed and was about ready to start when a police car slowly rolled by.

The cop hit the brakes and got out of the car. So there we were, three freshman, one about to chug a beer, and the other two on the sidewalk with cans in our pockets, and the cop heading straight at us.

I tried to drop the can softly on the grass in the dark, but the can hit with a hard, loud clank right on the edge of the sidewalk. I thought I was 100% screwed. The cop walked up to one of the older guys on the porch holding the about-to-be shotgunned beer can and started reprimanding him fairly harshly with phrases like “trying to act tough?” and “what the hell is wrong with you?”.

There was a second cop hanging out by the car, and I was sure that at least one of them saw me and my friend drop the cans. It was really nerve-racking because not only had I never seen any sort of arrest up-close, but I thought I was involved.

Then after asking the kid for his ID and saying that he was on his bad side, things cooled off and the cop walked back to the car. My friend got off the porch and we walked away. I was bewildered as to why the cop never talked to any of us.

Shortly after I learned that one of the guys on the porch gave the cop the finger and quietly yelled a few words at him as he was driving by. The kid just did it as a joke for his friends, he didn’t intend for the cop to see or hear him.

The cop had his window down and must have heard him. I actually never took any notice of the kid giving the finger or cursing, so I thought the cop was coming after him for forcing beer into an underage kid.

So we walked back and came away with a somewhat decent story, I hope. I think it would have been much better if the cop came after us for underage drinking, didn’t buy our bullshit-sounding story, breathalyzed us, and we all blew zeros.

Maybe next time.
