Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Dumbass
The funniest things I experienced in first year encompass his words and actions. This essay he submitted to his English class is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. As you read this, keep in mind that he did not hand it in as a joke and that he actually made it to university... and his first language is English.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Dr. Henry Jekyll a nice but very lonely, mysterious and dark man. Was a well known scientist and was liked, although he kept to himself. Mr. Edward Hyde also very dark, but not well known he is not well liked since he is not seen often. People believe him to be a mean older man. Hyde's one friend is none other then Dr. Jekyll. Although you never see them together. When Hyde is said to have killed a man and Jekyll is asked about where he has ran too, Jekyll states that there is a note that Hyde had left for Jekyll to read saying he was ok and not to worry about him. When Jekyll's butler is asked about this letter he replies that nothing has been delivered all night. There has also been no evidence that Hyde could have fled. What exactly is Dr. Jekyll trying to hide.
"The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", is a very dark and mysterious novel which keep you on the tips of your toes, with eyes glued to the pages, while your finger nails dig into the top of your reading desk. What makes this novel so eye catching is the suspense of not knowing what will happen next and keeps you on the edge of when Hyde will strike again.
There are many questions which have been asked about this novel such as why is this story said to be a case? And How does it connect to the novella?
In the novel there are many references that show how the story is a case. Such as how it is never fully found out that Hyde was infact Dr. Jekyll just as another personality. Jekyll being a scientist had been working on an experiment that he wished to try and it back fired as it gave him a split personality, an evil personality named Edward Hyde.
Through out the story Utterson also had been trying to find out why Dr. Lanyon who had used to be best friends with Dr. Jekyll was no longer working with him. In the end neither Jekyll or Lanyon would give Utterson an answer. Though Lanyon they found out had given a letter to Jekyll stating that he could only open it once Jekyll was no more. Which was found very strange which I believe is considered a case tring to find out how it could possibly be opened if Jekyll was no longer alive and why Lanyon would even send him a letter if they were no longer friends.
Later in the novel another mysterious case appears when Lanyon is found dead in his office as everyone wonders why, they all know that this will now just further complicate the earlier problems which they were trying to solve.
Finally we make our way to the final case that had found in the novel the most important and breath taking of them all. As Utterson and the rest of the men approach Jekyll's house they here arguing behind one of the doors very angry voices coming from the other side. One voice they describe as Henry Jekyll and the other as Edward Hyde. By the time the men got the door open they found the body of Edward Hyde laying dead on the floor. With the bottle of poison the potion Jekyll had bought empty. I believe that is the most important case to the novel since they never find out if it was Hyde who had killed Jekyll if Hyde had killed himself or if Jekyll had killed Hyde. Most of all hte never found out that there was not actually two different bodies fighting and arguing on the other side of the wall, there may have been two different voices, there may have been to different personalities, but there was only one body.
As you can probably tell by now throughout the novel there are many different cases that evolve, which none of them end up getting solved. They are mysterious very strange cases I believe that the whole novel is one big case and these explain my theory of why this novel is stated as a case. Even more why is stated as the "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde".
Another question I find very intriguing is why the Corpse at the end of the novel assuming you do know that Henry Jekyll is the same person as Edward Hyde, is found as Edward Hyde and how important is it to the novel.
Well I believe it is extremely important, since the novel is a gothic novel it is not showing like other romantic novels the good always winning gothic novel wanted to be dark, scary and evil. Showing Edward Hyde's body at the end is shoing how evil defeated good and took over his body even though he was able to poison himself it shows that in the novel evil is seen as more strongly then good.
How you know evil has defeated good in the novel and that Hyde has taken over Jekyll's body is when they have found the letter written by Jekyll after breaking through the door stating that he would no longer be able to hold on and tak care of Hyde when he was gone. Also earlier in the novel when Lanyon wrote the letter to Jekyll but was really written for Hyde to read once he had taken over Jekyll’s body shows that even Lanyon knew that evil was about to take over.
Brent only lasted one semester.
