Fon Jovi: True Guitar Hero

The hot girl I had been looking for, for months, tapped me on the shoulder and it was on!
This story has developed over a period of 5 months or so. It was April of 2007; I just worked an 8 A.M. – 6 P.M. shift on a Wednesday. On the drive home from work I was calling my friends to see if maybe they wanted to go out. Even if we played poker or something, I didn’t want to just go home and do nothing. After a few calls, everyone was either working or busy, so I ended up going home.

After watching TV, eating, showering etc. I decide to dust off my Xbox 360, which I hadn’t played in a while and I start going through the few games I have. All my games were either outdated or just boring. I needed to go out and buy something new. So I hit up the local Best Buy. I get a couple of movies and I head to the video game section. In there, I see this kid maybe 1 year younger than me playing this game called “Guitar Hero 2.” In “Guitar Hero” the player uses a guitar-shaped controller to play rock songs as notes scroll towards the player. The guitar shaped controller has 5 buttons simulating frets and a strumming button like on a real guitar. It even had a whammy bar. So I soon gain interest and I watch this kid play song after song. From “Sweet Child O’Mine” by Guns N’ Roses to “Message in a Bottle” by The Police. Ninety dollars later, I had the game in my house and I was playing it. I got really good at in a month or so, beating the game on its most difficult setting.

By Mid-May Guitar Hero 2 was just another object in my room collecting dust. A few weeks later on a Friday my friends and I all went out to some bar in Brooklyn and got trashed. By 2 a.m. everyone, other than the kid driving us home, couldn’t function. Before we leave I look toward the back of the bar for a bathroom. On my way there I see this girl, possibly one of hottest girls I’ve ever seen. I wanted her. She was with some of her friends and looked like she was having the worst time of her life. By this time, my friends were outside waiting for me to leave. So I go to the bathroom. I come out and she’s all alone. This was my only chance to talk to her.

I start walking towards her and we make eye contact. I say “hey” and she says “hi.” As I get near her, someone bumps into me and I start going down. On the way down, I start to hear myself in my head saying “Hey Fonz, aren’t you wasted?” SMACK! I was down. Two kids that I had known during High School help me up and bring me to my friend’s car. What a mess. On the way home all I could think about was what a total ass I just made of myself and if I would ever see the girl again. One of my friends says to me “Fon Jovi, (a nickname that had developed in high school because I had been to a couple of Bon Jovi concerts. Fonz + Bon Jovi = Fon Jovi. I hated the name but whatever.) What the fuck happened to you?” I tell my friends the story and they break out into laughter. Yea I laughed too but I was still upset to not even get this girl’s name.

Every time I went to Brooklyn after that, I would look out for her. The rest of May goes by. No sign of the girl. I eventually stop looking and go on with my life. June arrives. Finally summer was here and no school to worry about. One Friday night my friends all go to some kid’s house party in Staten Island. I had work late that night and didn’t get home till 11. One of my drunken friends gives me directions to the kid’s house over the phone and I end up getting there at like 12:30. I park my car and start heading towards the house. I walk in and I don’t see anyone I know, other than my drunken friends who were introducing me as “Fon Jovi” I ignore them and get myself a beer. I start wandering around the house. I find the living room to find the biggest LCD TV ever. This thing had to be at least 75”. You couldn’t find this TV at a regular place. Not only was the TV big but they had sickest sound system ever and this kid was playing Guitar Hero 2.

A crowd of people surrounded the kid, who was playing terribly and making everything sound like shit. One after another some kid would try it out and screw up classics like “Strutter” by Kiss and “Hush” by Deep Purple. Beer after beer I watched this. I have a buzz and finally I got fed up with the amateurs. I go up to the kid who was next and I say “my turn.” I put the mode onto hard and suddenly the room’s attention is on me. I pick “Free Bird” by Lynard Skynard, the longest song in the game. I start and I’m playing the song perfect two minutes into it. More and more people come into the room, including my friends, who start a “Fon Jovi” chant. The sound system is at the loudest and everyone at the house is in the living room watching me. The song breaks out, everyone is drunk and everyone is singing. This could be one of the best moments I’ll ever have with an Xbox. The song ends and I just completed the song perfect on hard. I get a round of applause by the 50 people in the living room.

Everyone thinks my name is Fon Jovi and I’m exhausted. I collapse on the couch with my last beer for the night before I head home. Everyone is coming up to me, asking me where the hell I learned to play the game so good and all that. A little while passes and I head into the kitchen to find my friends. Someone taps on my shoulder. I look behind me and it’s the girl from the bar that night in Brooklyn. I couldn’t believe it. She was like “remember me?” I was like “How could I forget you?” We talk for about two hours. It’s now like 3 A.M. and my friends are gone. The house is a little quieter than when I first got there. We both get drunk, not as bad as I was that night in Brooklyn, but still drunk. We ended up making out in one of the bedrooms. And that’s how one of the great nights of this year ended.

I got home at like 4 a.m. and slept with the biggest smile on my face. That night I wasn’t just Fonz…I was Fon Jovi.
