Serious Greek (Texas Tech) Balls

Several of my fraternity brothers and I were in Austin for a conference run by nationals and alumni from that region, along with brothers from chapters from two surrounding states. Our chapter at Texas Tech is a now medium sized chapter getting stronger and damn near unstoppable. But for some reason we were still thought of by the Texas guys as the red necks from West Texas, who don't have what it takes. I didn't like how our guys were treated from the very beginning of the day. And true, west Texas people are real, and they'll back down from a fight a lot less often than say somebody from Austin. I have a tee-shirt that reads, "TEXAS TECH" on the front, and the back says, "Eating Longhorns And Crapping Aggies." The Sooners' fans were the only fans with enough courage to actually come to a football game in the fall of 2003.
In Texas many people either think you have to go to UT or Texas A&M. And probably back in the day of these particular arrogant alumni ('70-'80). But I like to think of Tech as one of the best kept secrets in the Lone Star State. The whole messed up thing about this conference was that we had more brothers there than any other chapter in that region. We owned the place. I think part of their arrogance was out of insecurity.
Now back up about four weeks. It made national news that Coach Bobby Knight (a coach loved by most here, and certainly by the majority of students) and our chancellor got into an argument at a supermarket here in Lubbock. Personally I loved that. The way I see it you can get all other state school employees from any old place, but there's only one Bobby Knight. And whether he's winning or losing, he's proven never to be a "pushover."
So the Saturday of this conference, Texas Tech was also playing Texas in basketball there in Austin. But since we were in meetings all day no one got to see any of the game and we never knew the score. To make a long story short I ended up getting stuck in an alumni workshop with only one of my pledge brothers and four other "suits" (arrogant alums from the UT chapter).
As soon as we were in there, one of the suits asked us if we were already alumni. I was a sophomore and the other guy was a freshman at the time. It was then that we realized this was a workshop for alumni only. But since nobody else came they went ahead and just had us stay. And actually it turned out to be beneficial for them to have us undergrads in there. In the beginning of the meeting when we were still making small talk with the has-been's, the basketball game creeped in and out of the conversation.
After the meeting was over and the old men were done rambling on about how we're out in the middle of nowhere and other things that only alumni from Texas University care about, the suit who was teaching the workshop checked his phone for the score and said with a smirk on his face:
"Well, I have some bad news for the gentlemen from Texas Tech. Texas-74; Tech-71." Then the other three suits, all of whom graduated from Texas, started grinning and flashing us the Hook 'Em Horns sign.
By this time I had had enough. I had stayed quiet throughout most of the meeting. These guys didn't know who they were dealing with and not only that, but I still to this day don't think they ever realized how well our chapter had gotten. We were recognized nationally for recruitment. It was time to teach these damn longhorn geezers some respect, West Texas style, Bobby Knight style.
So I jumped up and grabbed the chair sitting next to me, lifting it over my head, and hurling it across the floor of this large, cafeteria style room like it was a frisbee. It bounced three or four times making plenty of noise before sliding to a stop.
You should have seen the looks on their faces. I even scared my own pledge brother. Let’s just say they put their "horns" down quickly. I said, "That's [chapter's name] style right there." They looked scared, and I walked out.
For the rest of the day I never so much as smelled a bit of disrespect.
