Bachelor Party
What is the best time a man will have before marriage? That's right, the bachelor party! Before his future wife puts the leash on him (just kidding), the groom-to-be has to turn in his amateur status in style. We're talking booze, strippers, drugs (if that's your game), loud music, you-name-it! If you're planning a wild bash for your best friend who's settling down, watch Bachelor Party to learn how to do it right. He'll thank you, but the bride will likely prohibit him from ever talking to you again. Tom Hanks stars as Rick Gassko, a likeable but obnoxious bus driver who somehow manages to win the love of Debbie Thompson, a beautiful daughter of a rich man. Mr. Thompson despises this slob and prefers Debbie's ex-boyfriend, Cole Whittier. Cole is the stereotypical movie ex-boyfriend: rich, handsome, athletic and a total sphincter. One day, Rick gathers his closest buddies for an important announcement: He and Debbie are getting married. Rick's best friend Jay O'Neill promises to throw Rick the biggest bachelor party ever. Cole is unhappy about this recent development, so he teams up with Mr. Thompson for the purpose of splitting up Debbie and Rick. At this point, the tired snobs-against-slobs plot takes effect. Cole tries to bribe Rick with money, appliances and Cole's beloved Porsche. His offers rejected, Cole resorts to more persuasive action. Meanwhile, Rick's last chance to go wild awaits him in the town's classiest hotel. The casting of Tom Hanks for this movie makes more sense in 1984 than it does in 2002. When this movie came out, critics called him the new Bill Murray. I can see the comparison; both played annoying characters in comedies at the time. Hanks was getting notice from TV's cross-dressing sitcom Bosom Buddies and his feature film debut Splash. Now, the only sentence that will contain the names Tom Hanks and Bill Murray is this one: Hanks has evolved in his acting skills, winning back-to-back Academy Awards for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump and recently starring in the mobster blockbuster Road To Perdition. Even though this film was 18 years old at the time of this writing, it's still hardcore. Sexual content and nudity run strong, but in a comedic way. One of the most daring (and funniest) events in the film takes place at a male strip club. Rick and company find out that Debbie's bridal shower is taking a field trip to said club and devise a practical joke. They bribe the club's "most gifted" dancer to put his manhood in a hot-dog bun and carry it on a plate with other hot dogs and serve it to the bridal shower guests. The ladies grab their food, but Mrs. Thompson is having trouble. After a few tugs, she realizes that the wiener in her hand is not the one she ordered. Classic! If I were Tom Hanks, I'd probably regret starring in Bachelor Party; it is the complete opposite of his current dramatic roles. If you're looking for a great escape from midterms, a timelessly hardcore comedy or a chance to see Tom Hanks' acting roots, crash this Bachelor Party. Send any comments/ feedback to the author. |
