Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle

Demi's back in the spotlight, baby, and she's looking better than ever! Lately, the former Mrs. Bruce Willis had a guest appearance on TV's "Will & Grace "and has been romantically involved with Ashton Kutcher (or as I call him, "the lucky bastard"). Will her recent performance in the Charlie's Angels sequel catalyze a remarkable comeback for one of the best-looking actresses in recent years? Doubtful.

The Angels return for another case. This time Dylan (Drew Barrymore), Alex (Lucy Liu), and Natalie (Cameron Diaz) are looking for Ray Carter, the kidnapped leader of the U.S. Marshals Service. They save Carter after his kidnappers steal his titanium ring. Soon afterwards, William Rose Bailey, head of security for the Department of Justice has been relieved of his titanium ring and then murdered. The deal with these rings is that they contain the sensitive files of the Witness Protection Program. Separated, the rings are mere jewelry, but together, they can blow every federally protected witness's cover.

After both rings have been stolen, protected individuals are getting knocked off like bottles in a carnival tent. The list of suspects include The Thin Man, a nonspeaking villain from the first Charlie's Angels movie, and Seamus O'Grady, one violent Dublin dude. The Angels must find out who is leaking the witnesses' names soon, because one of the Angels could be the next victim.

It seems that one or more of the screenwriters watched the Mission: Impossible movies shortly before composing the screenplay. Full Throttle's plot is a rip-off of Mission: Impossible. In that movie, the NOC list was also divided in two, and each half was useless by itself. The Maximum Extreme 2 posters featured in Full Throttle bear an uncanny resemblance to the posters/DVD & VHS box covers. Lastly, the respective villains in Full Throttle and the MI films are all renegades. I didn't expect much creativity when buying the ticket, but such blatant copying almost bored me.

Full Throttle is a worthy sequel to a sexy action-comedy, though. The fighting scenes are more impressive and more frequent than in the first movie. The substitution of Bernie Mac for Bill Murray as Bosley was a great decision. Mac brings fresh comedy to the role of investigative assistant and the Angels' communication link to Charlie. For example, Bosley discusses the contributions of the Irish black. Finally, there are quite a few surprise guest appearances that I won't reveal here.

One way to think of the Charlie's Angels films is as a lighter, comical Matrix without the philosophy. Most of the stunts make you want to shout out, "There is no F'ing way that could really happen!" Of course, you might be fantasizing about the handful of beautiful lead actresses instead. Talk about something that'll never happen!

Alcohol does not play a supporting role in this action-comedy.

Diaz, Lui, and Barrymore might cause some jealousy in a relationship. Guys, be careful if you're taking your girlfriend to this movie.
