Bond's Back!

Die Another Day

Ever since Sir Sean Connery uttered the world-famous line, "Bond ... James Bond," in Dr. No (1962), The James Bond film franchise has become synonymous with action and excitement. Lately, though, the movies have become less original and more predictable. After the horrible The World Is Not Enough, one might think that the James Bond engine has finally ran out of gas. After watching Die Another Day, one might think again.

Agent 007 begins his latest adventure in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Bond intercepts a suitcase full of diamonds to be exchanged for weapons, and he assumes the trader's identity. However, a traitor blows his cover during the exchange. Bond avoids death, but he is captured and tortured for 14 months. Afterwards, his freedom is restored through a prisoner exchange.

Back home, Bond's reputation is tainted. Information left the prison where Bond was held, and Bond's colleagues presumed that his tongue loosened due to the pain. Bond sets out on a mission to uncover the identity of his betrayer, which takes him to such places as Cuba and Iceland.

Action sequences are more thrilling than the last few films in the series. For example, there is a great fencing match between Bond and diamond dealer Gustav Graves. The competition starts out as friendly; the fencers wear the protective equipment and use tipped foils. After Bond ups the stakes, Graves proposes that they shed the protective gear and use more lethal swords. The result is a fast-paced free-for-all battle between two men that wreaks havoc in the social club where it all takes place.

A popular aspect of the Bond films is the assortment of gadgets that Bond uses to save his ass. Bond's first watch in the film detonates a bomb. The second watch emits a powerful laser. Bond's ring can shatter glass, even the type that stops bullets. The car that Bond drives can turn invisible in any environment. Lastly, Bond's underwater breathing apparatus is the size of a pen, thus eliminating the need for cumbersome scuba gear.

The villain is typical of a Bond film -- charming, rich and evil. Graves invents a satellite-mirror that can reflect the sun's energy into heating the entire Earth. Publicly, he announces that the satellite could battle world hunger, but Bond finds out that Graves has a dastardlier scheme in mind.

Watch for Madonna's cameo during the fencing-club scene. She is the only singer who appears in the Bond film in which she performs the theme song. The corresponding music video is petty good too, and I thought her career was in the crapper.

Overall, Die Another Day is worth watching. Predictability is low; only one of my guesses about the plot came true. For what it's worth, Die Another Day makes me want to check out the classic Bond films, such as Goldfinger.
