Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Playing hooky from school, ahh, the memories! Somewhere along the line, we all applied our acting skills to appear sick for our parents. Don't play innocent with me; you're not fooling anyone. Most of us were too young to go anywhere. I personally just watched TV or played video games. In John Hughes' classic teen comedy, Ferris Bueller teaches the teenage masses how to maximize a beautiful day. In his signature role, Mathew Broderick (Election) stars as the ultra-popular Ferris, a guy who knows how to have fun. His senior year in high school is almost over, and he has accumulated nine absences for the year. Ferris fools his parents with a fake illness. Meanwhile, the school's dean, Mr. Rooney, is getting fed up with Ferris making him look like an ass. Mr. Rooney plots to catch Ferris playing hooky, so he can hold Ferris back another year and show the student body that his example will get them nowhere in life. Ferris's co-truants are his best friend Cameron Frye and his girlfriend Sloan Peterson. They borrow Mr. Frye's priceless restored Ferrari and take off to downtown Chicago. Their eventful day includes going to a Chicago Cubs game, conning their way into an upscale restaurant, browsing through an art museum, taking part in a parade, and eluding anyone who can bust them for absenteeism. This film has numerous classic quotes: "I am not going to sit on my ass as the events that affect me unfold to determine the course of my life. I'm going to take a stand. I'm going to defend it. Right or wrong, I'm going to defend it." (Cameron) "Oh, he's very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads -- they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude." (Grace, Mr. Rooney's secretary) "Pardon my French, but Cameron is so tight that if you stuck a lump of coal up his ass, in two weeks, you would have a diamond." (Ferris) "Cameron has never been in love -- at least, nobody's ever been in love with him. If things don't change for him, he's gonna marry the first girl he lays, and she's gonna treat him like shit, because she will have given him what he has built up in his mind as the end-all, be-all of human existence. She won't respect him, 'cause you can't respect somebody who kisses your ass. It just doesn't work." (Ferris) My favorite scene in the movie is when Ferris sneaks on a float during a German parade. He lip synchs to Wayne Newton's "Danka Schoen" and The Beatles' "Twist And Shout." During those songs, everyone watching the parade dances, and the scene is choreographed very well. Ferris is one of the most popular comedies in the past 20 years. Despite a target audience of teens, this film has a multi-generational appeal. The humor is effective, even after several viewings. Skip your history class and watch it. Save Ferris! Send any comments/ feedback to the author. |
