Final Destination 2

Final Destination quickly garnered attention as one of 2000's most clever suspense thrillers. Deviating from the typical superhuman psycho villain plotline utilized by 90 percent of the horror genre, FD's killer was a series of brutal accidents orchestrated by an unseen force. At first glance, FD2 looks like a rehash of the original, but the sequel presents a remarkable connection between the events from FD and the characters in FD2.

One year after a plane crash preceding a series of bizarre deaths, Kim (A.J. Cook -- The Virgin Suicides) begins a road trip with three of her friends. While driving, she predicts a horrendous accident that takes the lives of several motorists & passengers, including her and her crew. She snaps back to reality and notices trivial events that occurred in her premonition, thus proving its legitimacy. Kim boldly blocks traffic and saves several lives but interferes with Death's "plan" in doing so.

Soon afterwards, survivors start dying in bizarre fashions. Kim learns that there was only one true survivor of the plane crash, Clear Rivers (Ali Larter). Clear has since committed herself in a mental institution, and Kim consults her for help (in a scene that is reminiscent of the Hannibal Lector films). After much resistance, Clear checks herself out of the asylum to help Kim & Co. dodge Death like it was a loan shark.

The Final Destination film duo maximizes suspense by moving like a championship boxer. The director shows you movement in the left hand, and blasts you with a quick right hook. To illustrate this idea, let's take a close look at one of the death scenes.

Recent lottery winner and accident survivor Evan places a pan on the stove and sloppily pours cooking oil into the pan and plops some unidentified frozen food among the oil. He tosses some old food out of the window and sticks a container of noodles and an unnoticed fridge magnet into the microwave. Evan's new ring falls off and rolls into the sink drain. Evan reaches in, but his hand is stuck (expectation: the garbage disposal would puree his hand). While Evan is trying to free himself, the microwave goes haywire, and the pan catches on fire. Evan swings at the pan with a cloth but knocks it on the floor, spreading the fire (expectation: Evan is going to burn to death). However, Evan finally frees himself from the drain and gets out of the apartment seconds before it explodes. Evan climbs down the fire escape, but the ladder sticks (expectation: he will fall to his death). The ladder gives way; Evan lets go and lands on his feet. He takes a step and trips on the food he threw out minutes ago (expectation: he will get cut up by the glass on the asphalt). He seems ok, but the ladder above his face begins to fall again (expectation: the ladder will pierce his head). The ladder stops a foot above his eye (expectation: Evan will be ok). Seconds later, the ladder goes through Evan's right eye.

The cast and crew consist of nobodies. I'm not expecting big things from anyone associated with Final Destination 2, but surely people thought the same during Friday the 13th. Interestingly, one of the counselors in that movie eventually got Footloose near the Mystic River with A Few Good Men.

A significant amount of alcohol may be helpful in steadying your nerves, which will be taking quite a beating throughout the movie.

Despite a low level of on-screen romance, this horror flick will likely result in a girl's face on a guy's shoulder.
